Kate and Jude at "The Southern Most Point of the Continental United States"...
...and right next to the Southern Most Christmas Tree.
It is December 21st 2001.
Our friends Erica and Julia were gracious enough to drive us down here.
We tore them away from their "undemanding" lives in Massachusetts...while they wrote their papers and took final exams, we were packing the car. The moment they finished we tossed them in the car and headed south.
27 hours of driving later we were in the Keys. Home of Ernest Hemmingway!
...there were alot of chickens...
...and, hey! Catherine Street!
Amazingly enough Erica's stepmom, Deb, and her boyfriend Rusty were living on a houseboat just north of Key West.
Even more amazingly, they invited us all to stay with them!
We accepted. The houseboat became basecamp, and Erica and Julia slackpacked us for our first 66 miles.
These fish were living under the houseboat. (Oh, and by the way, slackpacking means hiking without carrying your pack. Someone drives the pack for you and gives it back later.)
This is Rusty and Deb's puppy, Tanner. Each night the girls would pick us up somewhere along Highway 1 and bring us back to the houseboat where Tanner would be waiting.
The next morning they would drop us off again where we left off. Deb and Tanner wave goodbye as we head off one morning.
Tanner thought he was King of the houseboat.
Here is Julia, onboard and not wanting her picture taken (we love you Julia!)
This is Erica being silly.
And here we are after our first day of hiking (ok, walking.)
Then we caught a Sunset Party
We met on the pier with everyone else
